ABout Gorman Evap
About Gorman Evap...
In 1945 R C Gorman and his son, Paul started a used appliance business that was on Henshaw Road in Phoenix, AZ. In time the company changed into a furniture business. They would travel to other states to obtain distressed and liquidated furniture and resell it.
About this time evaporative coolers were becoming popular. They sold coolers manufactured by others and produced room coolers themselves.
Paul moved the business to 2020 E. Washington. He added a sheet metal shop, and out of an automobile, motor built a machine to put louvers in sheet metal. Paul and Betty’s sons, Robert and David worked at the business as soon as they were big enough. David remembers making Aspen Pads at a very young age.
In the 60’s, the state wanted the property on Washington for a freeway (I-10). Paul sold the property to the state of Arizona, with the condition that he could retain possession of the property until construction of the freeway started. He bought property on 35th Avenue, just south of Thomas and built a new store/sheet metal shop, along with a couple of rental spaces. He had two locations until 1970 when he moved all operations to the 35th Avenue location.
In 1984, David and his wife, Pam (who had started working at the store in 1974) purchased the business from Paul and Betty. A few years later, they appropriated both of the rental units and used the entire building for Gorman Cooler Supply.
